When country boy Brent Draper put his application into the Masterchef Australia 2021 Season, the 31 year old boilermaker, who now resides on the Gold Coast, was looking to change the trajectory of his professional life. Whilst it didn't happen how he envisaged it, Brent Draper's life will never be the same, and we are all going to be richer because of it.
For those of you living under a rock, here is a recap of what happened 2 Sunday's ago on National TV, care of Channel 10's The Project...
If this isn't the realest moment on reality TV since Sarah Marie's infamous "bum dance" on the 2001 edition of Big Brother, i'll eat my hat.
Now in the interest of full disclosure, I do not watch Masterchef, and anyone who has experienced my cooking, would fully appreciate my lack of skills or understanding on what it takes to be a Masterchef.
When it comes to "reality TV", I normally focus on the bottom of the barrel trash shows The Bachelorette and Bachelor In Paradise. But Masterchef is a guilty pleasure of my main man Luke, and his lovely wife Ash, and they were watching the above show, when Brent flexed his, what I can only assume are coconut sized balls, and put his hand up on National TV and said he needed help.
Whilst I didn't see it live on TV the night before, my social feed filled up pretty quickly, as all the Mental Health pages were posting about this incredibly brave move by this great human being, so I was very aware of who this guy was almost straight after the episode aired and unbeknownst to me, Luke had already slid into Brent's DM's, and within 24 hours we had him lined up to be our next guest on Skip This Podcast. Holy shit was my initial reaction.
Believe it or not, my second reaction was to do some research for the Podcast. And one of the first things I found was this powerful quote on Brent's instagram -
"If you're not speaking it, you're storing it, and storing it gets heavy."
We have been preaching a similar message since day 1 of this podcast - talking about your problems is the first step in fixing your problems. Well maybe the second step, if you make admitting to yourself you need to fix something as the first step. Anyways, we are talking semantics, or whatever that word is.
Give people the keys to your brain and how you feel, and your life will be richer for it, instantly.
I related so strongly to Brent's story, as I know that first podcast episode when I "told the world" of the issues I was dealing with, my life changed forever, and for the better on that day.
Brent took it one step further when he had a similar "tell the world" coming out party, but he fucken did it on national TV. What a fucken boss move to tackle your mental health issues head fucken on.
Interestingly, he had the option at the very end to take the easy option, and ride off into the reality TV sunset, with more questions being asked as to the "why", but instead he took the much tougher road to have it all come out on National TV, and if he was ever second guessing this decision, the episode aired, 3 months after it happened, on the opening day of Mens Health Week. Now if that isn't fate kicking you square in the dick, I don't know what is.
So now this masterchef is telling his story to the world, and we are all listening. These are the stories that help break down the stigmas associated with those words "Mental Health".
This is a story that will help with Gus Worland's vision to change those words from Mental Health to Mental Fitness. We are getting there, but it is going to take some time, and there is a lot of work still to do, but there is doubt that this simple Aussie bloke from the Bush, Brent Draper, is going to be on the front line of changing the mental health narrative, for many years to come.
I feel like this podcast is a great insight into a great man. We are excited to share Brent's story, and he let us into his mind with some other great quotes and story, which spoiler alert, you will have to listen to, when this episode drops on Wednesday.
Whilst you wait for the episode to drop, go and give this legend a follow -
Thank you Brent for coming on to our little Mental Fitness Podcast and telling your story. It is going to help thousands of people. What an honor to have you on.
